Cross Country Girls Ready for Victory!
BMS Cross Country girls line up in anticipation of medals & glory!
Cross Country Rocks!
The Burnet Middle School Cross Country team traveled to Hico on Wednesday September 17 for their first meet of the season, and the team brought a lot of hardware home! This was a very big meet with more than 25 teams and over 200 runners in each division. BMS had 30 kids competing in the meet in 3 different divisions.

The 7th grade girls team is battling a few injuries (Jimena Lopez and Tyler Hinson) and we were only able to run with four girls, one short of making a team, but these four girls turned in great individual performances in their first ever competition. Competing for the team were Emily Justus 104th, Mandi Cockrell 57th, Alli Styron 22nd and Brittney Barksdale brought home a medal with 15th place.

The 8th grade girls turned in an outstanding performance as a team, scoring just 55 points; blowing away the competition and allowing them to bring home the team championship in their division. Scoring in the top 50 were: Makayla Adair 50th, Madeline Parker 22nd, Jalee Hill 21st, and Kathryn Drake 20th. Winning medals for the team and scoring in the top 10 were: Kadie Jones 6th, Alex Perez 5th, and Mariah Qualls 3rd. Other members of the team are: Shaylan Edwards, Ariella Horner, Chelsi Montes, Marissa Solis, Kayla Quintero, and Randi West.

At the Hico meet, the boys ran in only one division, not separating 7th graders from 8th graders. The team from BMS was made up of only two 8th graders and loaded with ten 7th graders. They ran against some very tough teams made up of primarily 8th grade boys. Our kids stepped up to the challenge, scoring just 92 points. This awesome performance enabled them to bring the team championship home to Burnet as well. Placing in the top 50 and scoring for the team were: Trenton Hafley 35th, and Derek Kiser 32nd. Three boys scored in the top 15 and brought home medals, they were: Shane Williams 15th, Joe Parker 6th, and Cutter Sims 4th. Other members competing for the team were: Brian Bullock, Price Carpenter, Colt Fox, Trey Smith, Seth Timmons, Cody Williams, and Kyle Myers.

The cross country team will travel to Salado on Saturday September 27th for their next competition.

If you see any of these kids, tell them great job and wish them luck! They really do a fantastic job, many of them are participating in two sports at this time, they come to Cross Country practice at 6:30 every morning and then stay after school for football or volleyball. They are a great group of kids and a joy to coach!

Thanks for all you guys do! Have a great day!

Saturday October 4th
The team traveled to Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock where Round Rock McNeil hosted the largest cross country meet in the state. This is the site of the Texas High School State Cross Country Meet. There were teams that traveled as far as Big Spring, Hereford, Lubbock, Port Aransas, Canton, DFW metroplex area and many more. This meet had 12 different divisions and nearly 3000 runners competing. Pulling up and seeing that many buses and people can be very intimidating, but the teams from Burnet Middle School stepped up to the challenge and came away with great performances for the day! Including a first place finish by the girls team.

In the middle school boys division the team did a fantastic job finishing in 3rd place out of 20 teams with 152 points. There were nearly 250 runners competing in this race. Burnet had 3 boys bring home medals for placing in the top 30. They were Colby Walker 26th, Joe Parker 17th and Cutter Sims 13th. Members of the team who also contributed in scoring were Derek Kiser 40th, and Shane Williams 56th. Two additional members placed in the top 100, they were Kyle Myers 72nd and Brian Bullock 96th. Other members competing for the team were Price Carpenter, Colt Fox, Blayne Parisher, Trey Smith, Cody Williams, and Ty Johnson.

The middle school girls division had over 250 runners and more than 20 teams including district rival Liberty Hill, who beat the Lady Pups at Salado in their last meet. This week it was the Lady Pups who came away with the victory, edging out second place Liberty Hill 127-141. BMS had 7 girls place in the top 50. Bringing home medals were Riana Bond 10th, Kadie Jones 21st, and Mariah Qualls 29th. Also scoring for the team were Alex Perez 32nd and Brittney Barksdale 35th. Rounding out the top 100 were Kathryn Drake 43rd, Madeline Parker 50th, Jalee Hill 63rd, Makayla Adair 73rd, Alli Styron 77th, Haley Frank 78th, Allie Doucet 88th and Jimena Lopez 98th. Other members competing for the team were Mandi Cockrell, Tyler Hinson, Emily Justus, Ariella Horner, and Marissa Solis.

These kids did an amazing job this weekend. Several were battling illness and injury and really put it all on the line for their teammates in the race. It’s an honor and privilege to have the opportunity to coach these kids on a daily basis, even though it’s at 6:30 in the morning!

The team will travel to Georgetown on Saturday October 11th for a final tune up before finishing their season on Saturday October 18th as they host the district meet here at Burnet Middle School. Come on out and support these kids, they are exciting to watch!
