8th Boys v. Llano
The 8th Grade Boys basketball team open play at home last night against a very physical Llano team. We started out a little slow, but after the boys relaxed a little things really turned around. I was very proud of the effort throughout the game and I felt like the boys did a great job of staying composed during the game. Like I said Llano was a very physical team. In the end though the Bulldogs where able to pull away and get a win in the season opener. The boys played very hard and I am very proud all of them!
We will now look towards playing Lampasas Friday night at 7:45 in The Burnet A team Tournament. The tournament will begin Friday at 4:00 P.M.

Burnet V. Llano
What a game! We played a tough and physical Llano team last night and although it was a tough game we came out on top. This was our first game of the season as well as our first district game. We started out slow, only scoring eight points in the first quarter even though the scoreboard read ten. The reason for that is that #15 for Llano decided we needed a little help and put one in our basket. We even cheered for him. After the first quarter the score was 10 -7. We had missed several lay ups and our defense was not up to par. We started the second quarter and our defense picked up we had several steals but were unable to turn them into points. At the half the score was 19-12. When we began the third quarter the intensity of our play really picked up. On defense we only allowed five points and our offensive output exploded, we scored eighteen points. The score at the end of the third was 37- 17. In the fourth we slowed the game down and let the clock run. We finished the game scoring six points to Llano’s five. Overall I am very proud of the team’s performance. They played a very good game and played physical. There were several times when one of the players dove on the floor to get a loose ball. They all displayed great hustle and enthusiasm.

Team Stats:
R.J. Vanwagenen: 12 points 10 steals 2 of 2 free throws
Weston Ramos: 10 points 5 steals
Zach Evans: 5 points 4 steals
Spencer Ray: 4 points 2 steals
Frederick Schmidt: 4 points 1 steal 3 blocked shots
Nick Foster: 2 points 3 steals
Alonzo Torres: 2 points 1 steal
#15 Llano: 2 points

7th Grade B team Basketball
The 7th grade B team basketball season is already in full swing with the B team getting out to a 3-2 record, playing games on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Monday. The team started off the season with a bang playing host to Llano on Thursday. After jumping out to a 8-4 lead, the pups played great defense the rest of the way keeping Llano to only 5 more points the rest of the game. Leading the way offensively were Joe Parker and Brian Bullock with 6 points each. Bullock getting 4 of those in the 1st quarter to help stake the Pups to the lead. Lane Goar chipped in 5, while Caleb Cardoza and Clayton Baumgart each added 4. Antonio Escamilla scored 3 while rounding out the scoring was Jerome Robertson with 2. The final score was 30-9.
Next for the Bullpups was a huge task. The team had to step in for a late cancellation and play in the A team tournament in Burnet. The team drew in the first round eventual champion Marble Falls. The team played scrappy the entire game and put up a great fight. The pups only trailed 8-4 at the end of the 1st quarter with Bullock and Parker putting the points on the board. Then the Ponies cranked it up a notch and put the game away with a strong 2nd and 3rd quarters outscoring the pups 25-3 to ice the game away before the final buzzer sounded with the game ending at 35-9. Parker finished the game with 4, Bullock with 3 and Baumgart with 2. The team had many steals and good looks at the basket but could not get any shots to fall.
The next morning found the Pups playing the Billies of Fredericksburg. The game went back and forth the entire game. Caleb Chapa scored 4 points in the first to give the Pups a 9-8 lead. Good defense and rebounding by Goar and Cardoza along with Nick Ybarra helped the Pups cling to a 15-14 lead at half. Jerome Robertson and Cable Anders helped Burnet increase the lead in the 3rd to 21-16 before the entire team effort came to a conclusion as the pups won 26-24 to move to the consolation championship.
The team was not going to be denied as they took on the Lampasas Badgers for the consolation trophy. However, Lampasas was just as determined and got off to a quick 10-0 lead in the first quarter before Burnet got things going to end the quarter trailing 15-5. The Badgers again started strong in the 2nd quarter and held a lead at half 22-10. But the Pups never say die attitude came out in the 2nd half as they battled in the 3rd quarter to get back to 26-15 before falling at the buzzer 32-19. Nick Ybarra led the effort with 5 points. Tommy Cromer and Baumgart each had 4. Robertson and Cardoza contributed 2 each while Chapa and Anders scored 1 apiece.
The team then went on the road to Liberty Hill on Monday and thoroughly dominated the Panthers. Parker and Baumgart each nailed 3’s to help the Pups race out in front 14-0. From there, the Pups were on cruise control and stretched the lead to 20-5. After a nice 3rd quarter and the lead at 28-7, the team eased to a final of 32-9. Ybarra led the way with 6 points. Parker added 5, while Goar and Cody Williams scored 4 each. Baumgart had 3 while Jeremy Ayers, Robertson, Bullock, Anders, and Cardoza all had two.
The team will next play host to Wimberley after taking a break for Thanksgiving.
8th grade boys A team results
Well the boys just came off of a tough weekend and Monday night. We played in our tournament Friday and Saturday and then traveled to Liberty Hill to face a good and physical team. We played hard but where just unable to really get everything together and so out of the four games we ended up with 1 win and 3 losses. I am very proud of the effort the boys are putting out each night and believe that it will not be long that we will turn that into wins. I have a great group of kids to work with and they work hard day in and day out! Below are the box scores from the tournament as well as the game last night against Liberty Hill.

LLANO
The basketball season is upon us once again and BMS Boys played a stretch of five games in five days. It all started with Llano on Nov. 20th. The boys played very well for their first game. Great defense all game help create several steals which resulted in fast break lay-ups. Nick Stevenson, Chase Mardis, and Blayne Parisher had several big blocks. Trenton Hafley and Logan Knight controlled the boards while our backcourt of Trey Smith, Derek Kiser, Price Carpenter and Walker Townes made passing difficult for the opposition and had many big steals. Our boys played hard and had a lot of great plays, we made a few mistakes but we will continue to improve as the year goes on.

LAMPASAS On Friday we began our A team tournament here in Burnet. How first opponent was a very physical Lampasas team. Our boys came out strong and took an early lead; however we let Lampasas stay in the game to long. The second half was a different story. It was all Bulldogs, we finally showed that spark we have been searching for and ran away with the game in the second half by out scoring Lampasas 24 – 11. Our press forced one turnover after another and Smith, Kiser, Townes, and Carpenter made moving the ball complicated for the Badgers. With the addition of Shane Williams, he help provide a spark and dominated lose balls. Hafley, Mardis, Knight, and Stevenson did a tremendous job on the boards and Parisher helped with several big defensive plays. This game would be our biggest offensive out put of the year as the Bulldogs put up 44 points to the Badgers 27. Offensively we were lead by Derek Kiser with 19 and Trey Smith with 10.

BENOLD On Saturday morning our boys played Georgetown Benold in a very tight second round game. Offensively we did not have a great game and struggled to run a successful offense. Benold played very aggressive defense and our boys were pushed out of their comfort zone. Defensively we played well balanced game holding to Benold to only 16 overall points. Knight, Mardis, Williams, and Stevenson once again provide great defense down low on the blocks and grab many key rebounds for us. Hafley, Townes, Carpenter, Kiser, and Smith once again made it difficult to run any kind of offense. This game was a character builder for our boys to see how they performed in a tightly called and close scoring game. Offensively the scoring was well balanced and most people scored a least one basket, but everyone played hard a fought game. The final was Burnet 24 Benold 16 to advance to the championship game against Marble Falls

MARBLE FALLS Later that day in the championship game Burnet faced off against a very physical and very talented Marble Falls team. From the opening tip Burnet came out scared and confused. Marble Falls jumped into and early press and a hard time breaking it. Marble was able to jump to an early lead and hold it. In the first quarter we had trouble slowing down their big post player and they went out to a 14-6 first quarter lead. The second quarter was no different and Marble had increased their lead to 27 – 15. In the third quarter our boys came out ready to play and were finally able to break the press. We got back into the game by playing solid defense and shutting down their big man, and closed the gap to 5 with under 5 to play. Hafley, Williams, Mardis, Stevenson, and Knight all played well with great defense and rebounds. Smith, Kiser, Carpenter, and Townes provided big steals to rally back the Bulldogs. The fourth quarter however was a crushing blow. Offensively we played well, but defensibly we collapsed and gave up 17 4th quarter points and lost 52-39 for the first lost of the season. Once again the Bulldogs were pushed away from their comfort zone and made a few mistakes. Trenton Hafley lead all scorers with 18

LIBERTY HILL Monday night out boys traveled to Liberty Hill to take on the Panthers in a physical contest and in a hostile environment. The first half was a struggle for both teams to score and was a very physical game. Our boys seemed uncomfortable going against the 2-3 zone and just could not find the open holes. After the first half of the game the Bulldogs lead 8-6. The second half began with a Bulldog explosion. We were able to control the third quarter and dominate on the boards and steals. After the end of three the score was 17-8 Burnet. Early in the 4th the Bulldogs increased the lead to double digits, but that lead would not hold. It seemed like a different ball game in the fourth quarter and the Bulldogs were tagged with foul after foul. The big difference in the fourth quarter was that Liberty Hill had 23 free throws in the fourth quarter alone to the Bulldogs 4. Liberty Hill out scored us in the quarter 17-6 to pull out a close game 25-23.

This is a team that has the ability to be outstanding. We still have some work to do, but once we can fix our little mistakes and come together as a team this will be a team to keep an eye out for the future of Burnet basketball. I want to send a special thanks to all the people who help with our tournament this past weekend. We could not have done it without you. Also special thanks to Ellen Mardis for organizing our hospitality room, you did an outstanding job. Please come out and support our BMS boys & girls this year when you get a chance. This is the future of Burnet, and let this young athletes know how much love and support our kids.

8B - Libetty Hill Game
The 8th grade basketball team traveled to Liberty Hill and played a tough game last night.
Our offensive output was way down but our defensive intensity made up for the lack of scoring. The game began with Liberty hill controlling the tip off but we were able to keep them from scoring. We began playing man to man defense and that worked well. The first period score looked more like the score at a football game does with us leading and the score being 7-3. Our defense kept us in the game by not allowing Liberty Hill to score. At the end of the second period the score was 10-3. In the third period we started off strong on offense scoring six points in just a couple of minutes but then we went cold for the rest of the period but, once again our defense was great only allowing Liberty Hill to score two points. The score at the end of the third period was 16-5. The fourth period was our worst from an offensive stand point we were unable to score at all. We gave up the most points in the fourth period with a total of four points. Even with the scoring difficulty we were still able to get out with a win and the final score was 16-9.

Weston Walker – 6 points 3 steals
R.J. Vanwagenen – 5 points 2 steals 2 blocks
Zach Evans-3 points 1 steal 2 blocks
Justin Brown - 2 steals 3 blocks

Alonzo Torres - 4 fouls
Nick Foster - 2 steals
Thomas Rhames - 1 steal
7th A - v - Wimberly
The 7th grade boys ‘A’ team faced off against Wimberley last night and won 36-21. From the opening tip the Texans were just outmatched by the Bulldogs. Burnet took the first basket of the game and never looked back. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 12-0 lead before Wimberley ever scored. Excellent defense helped jump start the team early and it carried over through the remainder of the game. Derek Kiser, Price Carpenter, Trey Smith, and Walker Townes all had great backcourt play and helped set the tone of the game with several steals and great defensive pressure. Blayne Parisher, Shane Williams, and Nick Stevenson shut down the paint with great aggressive defense, and Trenton Hafley, Chase Mardis, and Logan Knight all had a great game controlling the boards. The Bulldogs made a lot of progress during this game, and showed the potential they possess. The Bulldogs could have poured it on but choose to play back to work on running our offense and improving on man defense. Trenton Hafley led all scores with 16 points. I am proud of the way these young men played, and came together as a team. I believe this team is starting to grow and mature into the team they are capable of. Burnet improves to 4 – 2 for the year and 2 – 1 in district play.

7th grade C 2 v. Marble Falls
The 7th grade C 2 team from Burnet played host to Marble Falls on Monday. It was there first game of the year and they hung on to win an exciting game. The Pups took an early lead of 4-2 after the first quarter led by Tristan Martinez and Zach Bates. Burnet then took off in the 2nd quarter to lead at half 14-4. Cody Williams did most of the damage in the quarter by scoring 6 points. The Ponies came out fired up and ready to play in the 3rd quarter by cutting the lead to 16- 10. Taylor Holcomb drained the lone bucket for the Pups. The 4th quarter saw the Pups be held scoreless even though they had plenty of good passes and great shots but the bucket was not very nice to the team. Marble Falls had a chance of tying the game with a last second 3 but Austin Crain, who played great defense all night, blocked the final shot to give the Pups an exciting 16-13 victory. Also playing great were Storm Wood, who scored 2 points, Christian Ramirez and Mason Cogburn. The team is now 1-0 on the season and will travel to Lampasas this weekend to participate in their tournament.
7th grade B v Wimberley
Score by quarters

Scoring- Brian Bullock-8; Clayton Baumgart-7; Joe Parker-6; Caleb Chapa-4; Cable Anders -4; Nick Ybarra-2; Jerome Robertson-2; Caleb Cardoza-2; Tommy Cromer-1

The boys played great defense all night long. They learned a new defense and offense during the week and by the 2nd quarter were running them very well to put the clamps down on an overmatched Texan team. The rebounding also started to show up very well. The boys have shown tremendous improvement since the season started and will be tough to handle through out the rest of district. Ybarra, Bullock and Baumgart had several steals and Parker, Cardoza, Lane Goar, and Robertson led the rebounding effort. The boys refuse to be outhustled. Their record is now 3-0 in district and 4-2 overall. The team will play host to Ingram Tom Moore next Thursday at home before hosting a B team tournament next weekend.
7th Grade C results
The 7th grade basketballers from Burnet split up into two teams and traveled to Lampasas to participate in the Badger tournament. The first team to play was Burnet White and they took on a very good, fast and talented team from Cove. The team fought hard and put up a valiant effort but they came out on the losing end. Storm Wood played very well as did Mason Lambert, Taylor Holcomb, Brandon Bible, Mason Cogburn and Keaton Castillo. The team then played Marble Falls’ C team the next morning and again put up a great fight. Colton Fox played extremely well as did Christian Ramirez who drained a 3 pointer. Bible, Wood and Castillo also played well.
The other C team, Burnet Green, also played two games in the tournament. The Green opened up against host Lampasas and played one of more exciting games in the tournament. Green spotted the Badgers an 8-0 lead at the end of the 1st quarter before getting things in gear. Led by Zach Bates and Cody Williams, the team cut the lead to 12-6 at half. Tristan Martinez and Derek Gobel helped the team get back to 14 all at the end of the 3rd quarter. The teams played tremendous defense in the 4th to keep the game close with Lampasas finally taking a 20-19 lead with 50 seconds left. After several defensive stops, Burnet had several good looks at the basket to steal the win but none of the shots fell and they lost 20-19. Also playing well were Jeremy Ayers, Luke Webb, Austin Crain and Lane Webb. Green would then have to play the B team from Marble Falls on Saturday. The team played hard but could not overcome the height advantage that the Ponies had on them. The team fell 39-24 despite a great game from Williams, Gobel and Jacob Holland. Also playing well were Lane Webb and Ayers.

The C team then combined and played the same Lampasas team again. The team played hard but the outcome was not so close this time as Lampasas pulled out a 39-21 victory. The team played well and had plenty of looks at the basket but the shots would just not fall. The team pulled within 3 or 4 on several occasions but the Badgers would push the lead back out again. Zach Bates poured in a game high 13 points. Also playing well were Cody Williams, Storm Wood, Luke Webb, Derek Gobel, Colt Fox, Austin Crain, and Keaton Castillo.
The team will travel to Lampasas to play them again next Monday.
7th vs. Mountain Valley
The 7th grade Boys B team played host to the Hawks from Mountain Valley on Thursday night.
The boys got off to a great start with a 3 on the opening possession from Joe Parker and they never trailed. This was by far the best game we have played yet. We made great passes to the open man for easy layups and the press looked great. We did a great job of blocking out and rebounding.

Score by quarters 1 2 3 4 F
Burnet 9 12 8 6 35
Mountain Valley 0 1 5 5 11
Overall record 7-4, district record 5-0

Scoring- Jerome Robertson- 14; Joe Parker-7; Cable Anders-4; Caleb Chapa-4; Brian Bullock-2; Lane Goar-2; Caleb Cardova-2;
Tommy Cromer did a great job of rebounding on both sides of the floor as did Clayton Baumgart. It was great to have a healthy team again and they played magnificently. They are playing great and the great thing is they have not even yet begin to scratch the surface of how good they will be.
7th Boys “B” Basketball
The 7th grade Bullpups had a busy weekend. We played 4 games in 3 days and saw some great improvement. I am very proud of the way these boys have improved. We had to play shorthanded as well, Clayton Baumgart was sick with the flu, Joe Parker was running in the nationals in Virginia and Brian Bullock could not play the last game due to an injury sustained in the early game on Saturday. But they fought hard and never quit.
Thursday v Ingram- We got off to a slow start leading only 4-2 at the end of the first before we finally kicked things into gear and ended up winning 39-15 to go 4-0 in district.

Saturday v Kelly Lane from Pflugerville- This team was very athletic and fast. We played very hard but could not get any shots to fall. The kids then pressed to hard to get back into the game and started making mistakes but they never quit. They could just run faster and jump higher.

3rd place game V. Wiley from Leander- We really played great this game. Being shorthanded, it started to show in the boys in the 2nd half but they really kept playing hard. The intensity was there, but playing with only 8 for two games with teams that like to run really started to show here. But they kept playing and I love their heart. These boys really showed that they are warriors and I could not have been prouder of them.

v. Ingram
Last Thursday night we hosted the Ingram Warriors. We came out a bit slow, but it didn’t last for very long. We really picked it up both on the Offensive and Defensive end of the floor. All the guys really picked it up and played well. I am really happy with the way the boys are playing together. We came away with a 70- 41 victory to move to 3-1 in district and 4-3 overall. Our next game is at home Dec. 18th vs. Mountain Valley.

7A v. Ingram
Thursday night the 7th grade ‘A’ hosted a very physical and aggressive Ingram team, and won 49-31. This was our biggest offensive outpouring of the season and our boys played great all game. Right from the opening tip Burnet jumped all over Ingram and scored a season 19 in the first quarter. Derek Kiser, Shane Williams, and Trenton Hafley lead the spark and Kiser busted a big three that gave the Bulldogs an early 12-0 lead. Offensively the Bulldogs played extremely well and scored at least 10 points in every quarter. We have finally fixed a few of our problems that plagued this team in earlier games. Defensively the Bulldogs showed many bright spots, but still have some work to do. Trey Smith, Price Carpenter and Walker Townes played great defense in stepping up in the traps and forcing turnovers. Our big men of Chase Mardis, Logan Knight, and Nick Stevenson are showing improvement everyday and have really stepped up their game are becoming the force on the interior that we need. Blaine Parisher played extremely well on both sides of the ball and showed off his ability to make their turnovers into quick and easy baskets. These young men are starting to build chemistry together and are playing better as a TEAM, than they have all year. We look to continue to build on this success as we play our last game of 2008 on Thursday night against Mountain Valley right here in Burnet, Texas. We hope to continue playing good fundamentally sound basketball going into 2009 and will play host to Georgetown Benold on Jan. 3rd. We hope to end the year on a high note before our Winter Break and come back rested for 2009 and continue our season.

7A v. Mountain Valley
Thursday night the 7th grade ‘A’ team played their last game before our Christmas break against Mountain Valley. The game started off very sluggish and our boys looked to be a little out of sync and only lead 9-3 after the first. After a few adjustments the second quarter looked much smoother and the Bulldogs began to roll and pull away from Mountain Valley. With excellent steals by Derek Kiser, Price Carpenter, Walker Townes, and Blayne Parisher the Bulldogs were able to turn fast break opportunities into quick baskets. The Bulldogs ended the half with a 21-8 lead. The third quarter looked much like that of the first quarter and the Bulldogs just came out flat. Only leading 26-15 to start the fourth, the Bulldogs wanted to pull away and comfortably secure another victory. With the press still on the Bulldogs again forced many turnovers and were able to control the lead the whole game and pull out a 38-19 win. The boys played hard, but we did show several things that need to be improved. Defensively we had several bright spots, but seemed to struggle a little coming off screens. Chase Mardis, Trenton Hafley, Logan Knight, and Nick Stevenson played great once again controlling the boards and worked well on the low post. The team continues to grow stronger as a team, and these young individuals are growing as a player. We will continue our season after the Christmas break and our next game will be here in Burnet against Georgetown Benold Saturday Jan. 3 at 11am. We would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you to the parents for your support and for the opportunity to coach your child. Let us continue this success into the 2009 school year.

Jan 3 - Georgetown
Saturday January 3rd we hosted Georgetown Benold. After a long break from the hardwood we wanted to start the new year off right. We made this possible by getting a big win against a very good Benold team. The same team that had beaten us by 13 points earlier in the year. The boys played extremely hard and in the end pulled out a very close and hard fought battle. I am extremely proud of the hard work and dedication these boys have put into this season. Season Record: 6-3 District Record:3-1. The bulldogs will be traveling to Fredericksburg on Thursday and then both the 7th and 8th grade A teams will be competing in a tournament in Georgetown.

8B v. Mountain Valley
Last night the 8th grade b basketball team took on Mountain Valley. We played a good game ands came away with a victory. Mountain Valley had some good size athletes as well as some very quick ones. We were able to control the speed of the game with our trap defense and our zone offense. We gave them fits when trapping and ran around like wild Bulldogs on offense. Our rebounding has improved tremendously over the last couple of weeks and that helped us on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. The players are shooting the ball much better we had our first player with two threes in one game last night which was Zach Evans who scored 8 overall. Justin Brown had 8 points and an outstanding 15 rebounds, R. J. Vanwagenen had 7 points, Frederick Schmidt had 6 points, Ryan Wiley had 3 points, and Spencer Ray added 2 points.
